Melnik – The smallest town in Bulgaria

The smallest town in Bulgaria is located in a mountainous area in the southwestern foothills of the Pirin Mountains. Embraced by phenomenal sand pyramids, Melnik has preserved the atmosphere of traditional Bulgarian lifestyle and culture – picturesque houses with tiled roofs, narrow stone streets, wineries and taverns. The unique atmosphere is complemented by the Melnik River flowing through the main street of the town. Since 1968 Melnik has been declared a museum town.

Although small, Melnik is rich in sights – in the town you can see the natural phenomenon Melnik Pyramids, the architectural landmarks Kordopulova House, Pashova House, the fortress “Despot Slav” and several preserved churches.

One of the largest and well-preserved monasteries in Bulgaria, Rozhen Monastery, is located only 7 km east of Melnik. Near the town is also the Rupite area, together with the St. Petka of Bulgaria Monument and the national park – museum “Samuil’s Fortress”. Both attractions are included in the list of the Hundred National Tourist Sites.
