Veliko Tarnovo is a city of past and present, of legends and reality, of rich cultural heritage and vibrant public life. It is the crossroads of generations of Bulgarians and preserves the spirit of bygone eras sealed in every stone.
The emblem of medieval Tarnovo from its time as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom still rises in the eastern part of the city. The hill-fortress “Tsarevets” is surrounded on all sides by the waters of the Yantra River and still captivates with its grandeur and invincibility. Its spirit often awakens, echoed by the magnificent sounds of the unique audio-visual spectacle “Tsarevgrad Tarnovo – Sound and Light”.
Right next to it lies the Trapezitsa hill with the exposed foundations of 17 churches, and between them is nestled the picturesque Asenova neighborhood, with the elegant and beautiful churches of “St. Dimitar”, “St. Forty Martyrs”, “St. Apostles Peter and Paul”, “St. George” and “Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God”.
A must-see on any tour of the city is the Museum of the National Revival and the Constituent Assembly, located in the Old Konak. The building of the Turkish establishment was built by the legendary Bulgarian master Kolyo Ficheto. It was here that the Tarnovo Constitution was adopted in 1879.
In the immediate vicinity of the guest house is the Archaeological Museum, dotted with finds from all eras of Bulgarian history.
The old-fashioned Gurko Street still preserves intact for its visitors the unique architecture of the incredible Sarafkina House and the beautiful church of St. St. Constantine and Helena.
Another neighborhood that embodies the spirit of the Bulgarian Revival is Varusha. Here, the cobblestone Samovodska Bazaar meanders with its craft workshops, souvenir shops, and art galleries.
Near Veliko Tarnovo, the architectural reserve of Arbanassi is nestled. The small mountain village with winding streets and authentic Bulgarian Renaissance houses captivates the heart at first sight.
Also in the vicinity of Veliko Tarnovo, the ruins of the magnificent ancient Roman city of Nicopolis ad Istrum can be seen.
The Veliko Tarnovo region can offer many pleasant entertainments and surprises, as well as almost countless historical landmarks from all periods of Bulgarian history.
We wish you a pleasant stay in the Old Capital!
